Disorders Affecting Children

Mental illness can occur at any age. In America, 7.5 million children are affected by mental, developmental or behavioral disorders. Families know all too well that we are failing children and adolescents with mental illnesses. The antiquated and fragmented systems of care designed to serve the needs of these youth have repeatedly failed them, despite the fact that a growing number of young people are diagnosed with serious mental illnesses.

NAMI is working to focus attention on the critical need for systems reform and to support communities and families. Our goal is to build and support our grassroots advocacy to ensure an expanded systems reform agenda at every level of government.

Recovery

Recovery is a process, beginning with diagnosis and eventually moving into successful management of your illness. Successful recovery involves learning about your illness and the treatments available, empowering yourself through the support of peers and family members, and finally moving to a point where you take action to manage your own illness by helping others.

In the case of parents and caregivers of children and adoloscents, they can learn to be case managers for their children, helping them to grow up and manage their own recovery. One of the ways to do this is by taking the classes offered through Visions for Tomorrow.

Visions For Tomorrow

Visions For Tomorrow is a 12 Workshop course that addresses many of the needs our families have when raising children with mental illness.
